English Network Cluster
Our English subject leader cluster meetings and CPD is led by Dr Jeannie Bulman, a highly respected literacy teaching and education consultant.
“Jeannie Hill Bulman specialises in all aspects of Primary English Teaching and Learning. She is an experienced consultant, and has previously been a Deputy Head of two schools and English Subject Leader. She received her PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2015 and her research on film education led to her receiving the United Kingdom Literacy Association’s award for research in 2016. Her recent publication ‘Children’s Reading of Film and Visual Literacy in the Primary Curriculum: A Progression Framework Model’ (Palgrave, 2017) has recently been nominated for UKLA’s Academic Book Award 2018. She has also co-authored ‘Film Education, Literacy and Learning’ with Becky Parry (UKLA mini book series).
She provides training and consultancy in all areas of English (through course attendance and bespoke in-school consultancy, inset days and twilight training sessions):
– Raising attainment in writing
– Developing reading comprehension skills and strategies
– Improving standards in phonics and spelling
– Developing the spoken word and drama
– Embedding a visual approach to learning in English – use of film and visual literacy.
She is also an external moderator (KS1 moderator and Lincolnshire’s KS2 Moderation Manager) and can support with English SATs and writing assessments at Key Stages 1 and 2. She provides support for subject leader development, monitoring and action planning as well as bespoke research projects.”
Each session will include an opportunity for teachers to share their own valued practice and ideas as well as discuss or training they need to support specific areas of English across school.
The sessions are best suited to current subject leaders within their schools, they can be new to the role or well established – there are opportunities for everyone to learn and contribute to the network within a very friendly, supportive atmosphere.
By attending our cluster meetings we aim for English leaders to take the following back to their schools and colleagues:
• a clear understanding of the key messages regarding English provision;
• ideas for alternative classroom resources to support their role as English subject leader;
• shared ideas and concepts that have been tried in other settings;
• the benefits of networking with other colleagues in their local cluster.
English Cluster meetings are FREE to members of Connect TS Alliance. Non-members £50.00 + vat
The next English Cluster meeting will be on Tuesday 27th November 18, 1.30-3.30pm at the Connect Training Room, Staniland Academy, Boston, PE21 8DF
English Continuing Professional Development
In addition to the subject leader clusters we are delighted to offer a series of English training days covering very specific and prevailing issues that teachers are facing in the classrooms.
New teachers to Year 2 and to Year 6 have very specific needs, for whom understanding the dynamic nature of the curriculum and assessment expectations can often be a source of concern. To this end we are offering teachers new to these year groups a day’s training that aims to give them confidence and understanding of their year ahead.
We have selected elements which staff within our Alliance have requested support in as a starting point for our CPD offer. See the table below for full details of training we are offering.
The cluster meetings are the key forum whereby further training needs will be established, so to have your say- come along to the clusters!
Tailored training to your setting is readily available through our SLE and specialist teacher network. If you wish to discuss your needs in more detail please complete an enquiry form in the first instance. You will be contacted by one of our subject experts to discuss your needs in more specific detail.
